Following on from the “grave” installation and the inequality I felt throughout the process, I decided to create the “women’s status” installation where I balance myself on weighing scales with myself standing on one plate and a lentil stew balancing me on the second plate. On the scales I wrote down “two hundred zuz”, that's the amount my divorcee wrote in the ketubah.
And what does that even mean? The Jewish wedding is a ritual ceremony where the man contractually (the Ketubah) purchases the woman and owns her as his wife.
How do we even agree to have such a document?
When we are advised to secure ourselves with a prenuptial agreement, we waive it off on the grounds that it harms the romance and optimism that accompanies it in the most significant and positive moments of our lives.
